The Cantor's Voice November 2003
There is a well-known joke that goes as follows:
An elderly Jewish man is sitting on a park bench reading Reverend Farrakhan's newspaper. His best friend walks by, sees the paper, and stops -- in shock. "What are you doing reading that bogus newspaper?" he says incredulously. "Better you should be reading the Jewish Magazine!" The elderly man replies, "The Jewish Magazine has these sad and disturbing stories about intermarriage, anti-Semitism, problems in Israel -- all kinds of troubles of the Jewish people. I like to read about good news." In Farrakhan's paper, he says the Jews have all the money ... the Jews control the banks... the Jews control the press ... the Jews control Hollywood...the Jews are going to steal Iran oil. With this anti-semite newspaper, I get to read about good news!" ( I culled this version of the joke from a Jewish Humor website called JewishMag.co.il.) What isnt so funny is what the outgoing ruler of Malaysia, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, told the Islamic leader summit, meeting in Malaysia on October 16, 2003. Jews rule the world and Jews get others to fight and die for them. He also said, For well over half a century we have fought over Palestine. What have we achieved? Nothing. We are the worst off (sic) than before. If we had paused to think, then we could have devised a plan, a strategy that can win us final victory. Ah, the mind of the anti-Semite. It is always cooking up ways to reissue time-honored sewage. By the way, could someone please let me know when the next board meeting for Jewish People to Assume World Control takes place -- I missed the last one. Oh, and never mind that the IDF has been fighting and dying for the Jewish nation since before its inception. Reality is suspended for those who wish us to simply disappear from the earth, the distinguished Mr. Mohamad included. Mohamad did get one thing right, however. ...we have fought over Palestine. What have we achieved? Nothing. Until the mindset of the fundamentalist Muslim changes, and the goal of this movement becomes, How can we improve the world instead of How can we take over the world, nothing will change. Sadly, I dont believe this philosophy will change in my lifetime, nor do I believe it will change in the lifetime of my children.
As Americans and as Jews, we will continue to be confronted with challenges, such as these, posed by anti-Semites. God knows this task will not be easy; I pray that He give us the strength to meet these challenges. Amen.
