May-June 2004

No other Festival has as many names as Shavuot. It is referred to as:

1. Z'man Matan Torateinu, The Time of the Giving of Our Torah, as is found in the Festival liturgy.

2. Yom HaBikurim, The Day of the First Fruits (Numbers 28: 26) because it is the day on which a special meal-offering from the new wheat crop is brought to the Temple. It is also called by this name because Shavuot marks the start of the bikkurim (first fruits) season, when each farmer would bring to the Temple his first fruits from the seven types of produce with which the Land of Israel is blessed.

3. Hag Hakatzir, Festival of the Harvest, for it is at this time of year that the wheat crop is harvested, and it is from this crop that a special offering is brought.

4. Atzeret, which is translated as (Day of) Assembly, Restriction, or Restraint, does not appear in the Torah; it is the name by which the Sages refer to this Festival in the Mishnah and Talmud.

5. Hag Shavuot, Festival of Weeks, because this Festival is the climax of the seven weeks of Sefirat HaOmer, the Counting of the Omer, which it immediately follows.

Please join our KM Community as we inaugurate the marvelous Festival of Shavuot on Tuesday evening, May 25, beginning at 6pm with a catered dinner, followed by evening services at 7:15pm.

Students in our 7th grade class will help conduct services on the occasion of their religious school graduation.

Following services, the entire congregation is invited to an ice-cream sundae bar.

Our annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot (all-night Torah study) will begin at 9pm. It should be a lovely evening. I hope to see you there.

Hag Sameach.
