The Cantor's Voice
August 2005

We have a number of friends who traveled to Israel this summer to attend the Maccabiah games. Jews from 54 countries around the world gather every four years to compete in what is billed as the "Jewish Olympics."

Some stars of Maccabiyot from the past include Olympic gold-medal winners Marc Spitz, Kerry Strug, and Lenny Krayzelburg. The competition is top-notch, and from what I've been told numerous times, the games are both thrilling and heartwarming: thrilling due the nature of the competitions, and heartwarming because, ultimately, these are all Jews competing against other Jews.

Or so I thought. I was surprised to learn that the first Maccabiah gold-medal winner this year was an Israeli Arab teen, Asalla Shahada, 17 years old, from the town of Sakhnin.

She won her medal in the women's 200 meter breaststroke. "The Maccabiah belongs not only to all the Jews, but also to all the Israelis, and I am a proud Israeli," Shahada told YnetNews.

To say that this quote is refreshing would be a major understatement. Knowing that there are Israeli Arab citizens who feel this way gives me great hope for the future.

As we look forward to the month of Elul, a month of preparation for the Yamim Noraim, I pray that peace will come speedily, and in our day.

I hope you continue to have a restful summer.
