The Cantor's Voice April 2006
In Mishnah Pesachim 10:1, there is a rabbinical decree regarding the drinking of four cups of wine at Passover, based on the four expressions of redemption in Exodus 6:6-7-10:1). Apparently, it was instituted in the time of the Great Assembly ("Anshei Knesset HaG'dolah").
For each of the expressions of redemption, we thank and praise God with a litany of blessing and song, and drink a cup of wine in gratitude. According to the Shulchan Aruch, the four cups of wine must be accompanied by its appropriate recitation: the first cup by Kiddush, the second by Haggadah, the third by Birkat HaMazon, and the fourth by the remainder of the Hallel. One may not drink four cups in rapid succession in order to fulfill the mitzvah. Wine is a beverage of celebration, of sanctification and of holiness. Particularly now we have numerous selections of kosher l'pesah wines from around the world to choose from. Enjoy these wines throughout your seder and throughout the entire holiday. You will be elevating your expression of sanctification and enjoying some wonderful wines, to boot. I pray that your sedarim are filled with joy, with laughter, with serious discussion, and most importantly, with family and friends. Pesah Sameach V'Kasher.
