The Cantor's Voice
May 2006

I remember standing in line at the Avco Theater in Westwood back in the late 1970's awaiting my first viewing of Star Wars. What a thrill! The 6 movies (in total) have transported millions, if not billions, to galaxies far, far away (and a long time ago!)

One of the stars of Episodes 1-3 (made after episodes 4-6) is Israeli-born actress Natalie Portman. Aside from her beauty and intelligence (Harvard University grad) she is a staunch supporter of Israel.

In fact, the Jerusalem born actress is one of few Hollywood actors who speak openly about Jewish subjects, especially Israel. Portman said in a recent interview that she has become more pro-active in defense of Israel, which she considers home.

"I'm currently exploring ways to help because I love my country," said Portman. Speaking about how she has to defend Israel when someone attacks it, Portman has increasingly become more involved.

"These issues come up at parties and dinners with people who don't know a lot, and as someone who was born in Israel, you're put in a position of defending Israel because you know how much is at stake. It's become a much bigger part of my identity in recent years because it's become an issue of survival," Portman related. (ynetnews.com)

It is wonderful to see high-profile actors and others become more and more vocal about their support for our Jewish homeland, the only democracy in the Middle East (excluding the fledgling democracy of Iraq). Let's hope and pray that more people follow suit and that support of Israel becomes a cause that individuals aren't afraid to take a public stand on.
