August-September 2006

The memory of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon blasted off into our collective Jewish conscience once again. The space shuttle Discovery crew included the Jewish astronaut Dr. Garrett Reisman, who served as a payload specialist. Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Reisman's education includes a Ph.D. From Cal Tech in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Reisman became close with Ilan Ramon at NASA in Houston, where the two trained together. At Rona Ramon (Ilan's widow) request, Dr. Reisman attended a memorial for Ilan in Rehovot, Israel, where the Kaplan Medical Center was renamed in memory of Ilan Ramon.

Dr. Garrett Reisman became Bar Mitzvah in New Jersey, and has visited Israel three times. He received permission from Rona Ramon to bring mementoes of Ilan Ramon into space with him.

"Ilan had a great sense of humor and worked very hard to represent not only Israel but every Jew in the world," Garrett Reisman recently remarked. May the legacy of Ilan Ramon continue to strengthen the Jewish community and the world, and may God Bless the United States and the State of Israel.
