October 2006

Several weeks ago my Palm Pilot software crashed. Talk about panic. Like most of you, I've become quite dependent on my electronic devices: Palm, cellphone, computer, et al, to help organize and manage my life.

The idea that my entire calendar had vanished was pretty scary. Fortunately, I do have a desktop back-up, and after a little visit from my computer tech David, things were up and running again in no time.

Right after the first time I synchronized my hand-held Palm with my desktop organizer (hot-sync for those of you who like to use Palm jargon!) I noticed that every one of the calendar dates and phone contacts in both devices had two entries.

Monday, August 28, 9AM-Exterminator. Monday, August 28, 9AM-Exterminator. Every thing I had done for the past 5 years was duplicated.

Those of you who know me well know I had to fix this data problem, and fix it I did -- immediately. It took two hours.

This electronic duplication was quite eye-opening. It forced me to review, and remember, every appointment over the past 5 or so years.

My whole life for the last 5 years was there: funerals, weddings, shiva minyanim, work related meetings and lunches and more -- Everything.

I thought to myself, many times: wow, was that appointment 3 years ago? It seems like it was only last month. Has it already been 4 years since so-and-so died. I can't believe it.

Oh yes, I remember that meeting. I remember that lunch. I remember it all...

Time is fleeting. Our lives are passing by. Each moment is precious. Our tradition teaches us to live lives filled with goodness and holiness.

Reviewing my life helped me to remember the past, and, I hope, has given me the impetus to improve in the future. The gates of Heaven, and our opportunity for t'shuva, remain open through Hoshana Rabba the final day of Succot. There is still time...
