The Cantor's Voice
December 2006

I was ordering my tasty looking rib-eye steaks and chicken cut into 1/8ths when Zvi, the owner of Ventura Kosher Market in Tarzana, CA, relayed a story to me.

He told me that he had just confronted a religious Jew (judging from his kipah and tzitzit) who stole money from the market's pushke, or tzedakah box, in the front of the store. The man denied stealing from the box, and Zvi asked him if he'd like to watch the video tape. The man ran out of the store after the police were called, clearly ashamed and embarrassed because he was caught.

The notion of carrying God's name is one that is often overlooked, yet it is a major responsibility of all religious people.

If we identify ourselves as religious Jews, we must behave accordingly, for when a sin is committed by a religious Jew, all religious people, and the religious tradition itself, will be shamed. Clearly this thief didn't care about the damage he might cause to Judaism, not only to himself.

I wish you and your family a festive and bright Hanukkah holiday-may it bring great fun and joy to your family, and to all Israel.
