March 2006

The following was sent to me from the Board of Rabbis of Southern California/Jewish Federation to which I adapted:

If you are in good health, able, and willing to work, consider joining the Board of Rabbis of Southern California and the Jewish Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles on a Katrina Relief Mission.

From Sunday April 23rd, until Friday April 28th volunteers representing the Los Angeles Jewish community will live in Gulfport, Mississippi helping those in need re-build their lives. Shortly after Passover, those interested will travel to one of the hardest-hit cities on the Gulf Coast helping to rebuild a decimated community. Working with the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, MS, volunteers will clean, rebuild and most importantly, bring hope to an area that so desperately needs it.

The Federation, along with the Board of Rabbis is asking for a personal commitment of $100 plus the cost of travel to and from New Orleans. All other costs including food and lodging, supplies and ground transportation will be paid by the sponsoring organizations. The Jewish Federation is picking up all remaining costs.

Flights: Each participant will be responsible for his/her own travel. It is suggested that everyone plan on arriving in either New Orleans or Gulfport as early as possible on Sunday, April 23rd. The cost of the flight is estimated to be around $300-$350.

Lodging: Those participating will be partnered with the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, MS. The church has been an outspoken advocate of the State of Israel, opposing several of the resolutions passed by the larger body of the Presbyterian Church. The accommodations are not luxurious, to say the least. The church operates a tent facility to house volunteers„participants are encouraged to bring Aero-Beds, sleeping bags, ground pads, etc. There are shower facilities on site with hot water. As the time approaches, a detailed packing list will be provided.

Food: Vegetarian food will be provided for every meal, and kosher packaged foods will be available as needed.

Work: While there is no way to be certain about the exact work, understand it will be difficult, physical labor. Good physical health and a willingness to work hard are prerequisites for the trip. Prior experience is not! If you are skilled or experienced in building, roofing, etc. wonderful. If not, you will receive training and supervision from skilled laborers in the area.

Learning: As a service-learning trip, participates will take advantage of daily study sessions with an assortment of teachers and leaders. Together, through text study, prayer, and discussion, participants will learn about the Jewish commitment to social justice, and our religious obligation to our fellow human being.

If you are interested in the trip contact me at the synagogue office, or the rabbinic intern at the Board of Rabbis, Sari Laufer, at: (323) 761-8601
